Step-up devices

Some phono stages are designed to be used only with moving-magnet or high-output moving-coil cartridges.

To use a low-output moving-coil cartridge with this type of phono stage, you'll need a step-up device to boost the tiny signal from your cartridge before it can be amplified further by the phono stage.

There are two types of step-up devices: active devices, called "head amps" or "pre-preamps," which are specialised amplifiers, requiring electrical power, usually from the mains, and transformers, which are passive devices requiring no external power.
